Far North Queensland’s Ursula Donnellan is a Master Builders Queensland’s Industry Champion, winner of the Master Builders Queensland Women in Building Award in her home region and now a mentor for the Emerging Women in Construction program.
The program, led by Master Builders, is funded by the Queensland Government’s new Women in Trades Mentoring Program, and connects experienced professionals like Ursula, with first and second-year female apprentices shaping their career in the industry.
‘I’ve been fortunate to have great mentors throughout my career, so I’m eager to pay it forward by using my experience and passion for the industry to encourage, support, and inspire others,’ Ursula said.
The program offers mentoring, practical advice, webinars, training and events, and a dedicated online community to help women thrive in their careers.
As the Business Manager for Mark Fletcher Solid Plastering and Texture Coatings, Ursula supports apprentices in her workplace and through the Emerging Women in Construction program, is now mentoring a female bricklaying Solid Plastering apprentice.
‘Witnessing her skills and hearing about her career aspirations motivated me to support her in achieving those goals,’ Ursula said.
‘After the seeing the success of our male apprentices, I want the same experience for her and other female apprentices working in the industry.’
Ursula says the industry has become more inclusive, with increasing recognition of the value women bring.
‘Today, there are more initiatives aimed at attracting women to construction, like the Emerging Women in Construction program, while workplaces have improved policies for work-life balance and safety and harassment issues,’ she said.
‘This support network can offer emotional encouragement, motivation, and shared experiences, making it easier to navigate industry challenges.’
Ursula’s employer is a great example of an inclusive workplace, with business owner Mark Fletcher recently recognised as Awesome Women in Construction (AWIC) Male Advocate for Supporting Women in Construction.
As Master Builders Industry Champion, Ursula also visits schools to inspire students to consider careers in construction.
‘I want to inspire more women to enter and stay in the field, as it is incredibly rewarding and offers a strong network along with countless opportunities to develop and learn new skills,’ she said.
‘I encourage women to be open to exploring various roles and projects – the diversity in construction can lead to unexpected and rewarding career paths.’
