Covering Maryborough, Bundaberg, Emerald, Rockhampton and Yeppoon – The Awesome Women in Construction (AWIC) Roadshow, a ground-breaking initiative engaged and empowered over 3000 students across the Central Coast of Queensland from 13 May to 24 May 2024.
Our stop in Maryborough, included site visits to the Downer/John Holland state of the art manufacturing facility and Maryborough Trade Training Centre where students experienced Construction Skills Queensland – CSQ Virtual Reality, the COLORBOND steel Discovery Van and TAFE Queensland Augmented Reality Welding.
While in Bundaberg, students from local high schools had the opportunity to visit TAFE QLD to meet representatives from CQ Trade and Bundaberg Regional Council to assist in their career development and were joined by the Hon Lance McCallum MP, Minister for Employment and Small Business and Minister for Training and Skills Development and Department of Employment, Small Business and Training Director General Steve Koch.
Whilst on the road, we had the incredible opportunity to attend two local Career Expos:
1. Rockhampton Mega Careers Expo: Over 1850 students from local schools joined us for a day filled with inspiration and career exploration.
2. Emerald Career Expo: Over 750 students from 9 local schools came together to discover endless possibilities for their future careers.
Both days were a fantastic chance for anyone looking to kickstart, change, or enhance their career path. These expos were open to local schools and the general public, offering a unique opportunity to connect with various exhibitors.
The event brought together a diverse range of exhibitors, including tertiary education institutes, apprenticeship and traineeship providers, resource and civil construction organizations, and a mix of local businesses. It was a golden opportunity to engage with the future workforce!
Day 6 and 7 saw AWIC embark on a journey to inspire the next generation in Rockhampton. We had the pleasure of hosting students from various local schools on our industry immersion tour.
What a massive two days visiting Bunnings Warehouse Australia, Lysaght, Brickworks Building Products (Austral Masonry) and Kawana Cabinets where we delved into the world of innovation, career progression, and endless opportunities.
On the final day of the AWIC Central Qld Coast Roadshow, we had the incredible opportunity to take 30 students from Yeppoon State High School and St Ursulas College on a journey to explore the construction industry firsthand.
We visited GJ Gardner Homes, Ergon Energy, and Bunnings Trade Yeppoon who opened their doors to showcase the endless possibilities that await our future generation.
These students got to immerse themselves in the world of construction, gaining valuable insights into the diverse range of roles available to them.
AWIC is committed to supporting young women in rural and remote parts of Australia to assist them in furthering their career at both trade and professional levels within the construction industry. We are excited to share a range of resources FREE for use at any time.
