AWIC’s inaugural awards celebrate women in construction

In 2017, myself and 13 ladies from across the construction industry met up for a breakfast meeting before work, with a desire to connect and support other women in the sector.

Inspired by the experiences of these women and so many other women in the industry have faced, I founded Awesome Women in Construction (AWIC) with the goal of creating a supportive, like-minded community of women to empower and uplift each other.

Six years on and with more than 200 members, AWIC has connected women and hosted events from Golf Days to networking nights, to our annual International Women’s Day Lunch.

This past Friday, we celebrated one of our biggest achievements yet with the launch of the annual AWIC Awards.

Close to 300 guests attended the inaugural event, joining us at Cloudland to celebrate, recognise and put the focus on women working across all areas of Australia’s construction industry.

I had the privilege of facilitating eight days of panel interviews for these Awards, and I laughed, cried, was angry at some of the situations our nominees had faced, but most of all I was inspired.

One thing I know is that the construction sector is in safe hands with the high calibre of women who are the future of our industry.

Thanks to everybody who nominated a colleague or friend and to all of our nominees, please take pride in all your achievements and being an AWESOME woman in construction.

Our organisation grew from the desire to support and connect with other women in the industry, and I am incredibly proud of what AWIC has achieved so far.

More determined than ever, myself and the AWIC Board and Committee are committed to doing whatever we can to help raise participation, increase retention and amplify the voices of women in construction across Australia.
